Abstract art commissions

Commission a custom abstract painting from a real artist

Custom abstract art begins with a feeling, rhythm, palette, place, or story rather than a product template. Work directly with a MadeMay artist to create an original painting that belongs to your space and still carries the artist's own hand.

The people behind the work

Abstract artists available for custom work

Look for an artist whose existing work already has the movement, restraint, texture, or energy you respond to. A strong commission grows from that shared direction rather than asking an artist to imitate someone else.

The commission process

How a custom abstract commission takes shape

The brief should be specific enough to guide the work but open enough for the artist to make something alive. Share the space and emotional goal, then let the artist propose a visual direction.

  1. 01

    Show the space

Provide wall measurements, room photographs, viewing distance, lighting, and nearby colors or materials.

  2. 02

    Describe the feeling

Use references, words, places, music, or memories to explain the energy, restraint, movement, or atmosphere you want.

  3. 03

    Agree on boundaries

Confirm size, medium, palette range, orientation, installation needs, and how much creative freedom the artist should have.

  4. 04

    Review the finished piece

Follow the agreed review process, approve the original, and coordinate framing, packing, shipping, or installation.

Planning your commission

Commission the artist, not a copy

The best abstract commission starts with an artist whose existing work you genuinely like. Share examples from that artist's own portfolio and explain what draws you to them, instead of asking for a replica of another artist's style.

Scale matters. A piece that feels energetic in a small image can feel quiet across a large wall, while texture and subtle color may become more important when viewed up close.

Helpful details to share

  • Measure the wall and photograph the room straight on
  • Share colors as a range, not an exact paint-by-number brief
  • Describe the mood and energy you want
  • Discuss framing, edges, hanging, and installation early

Questions clients ask

About custom abstract art

Can an abstract painting match my room?

The artist can consider scale, palette, light, and nearby materials while preserving their own visual language. Share room photographs and measurements before the work begins.

Can I ask an artist to copy another abstract painting?

A custom commission should remain original. Choose an artist whose own portfolio you love and discuss the qualities you respond to rather than requesting a copy of protected work.

Will I approve a sketch first?

Review methods vary. Some abstract artists use studies or digital color plans, while others need to work directly on the final surface. Agree on the process and creative boundaries before commissioning.

How is a custom abstract painting priced?

Artist, dimensions, materials, surface preparation, texture, framing, shipping, and installation can affect price. Starting prices are listed here; the artist provides the final quote.
