Catching a Break

by Teresa Lynn Johnson

Subject: Pet portraits
Medium: Oil paint
Dimensions: 16x20
Created: 2024

Realistic portrait of a baby calf finding a break in the fence and pushing through with curiosity as to what is on the other side.

The commission story

Study several photo references to determine the most expressive view, then create a sketch capturing the likeness on canvas, move to the under-painting to capture correct values and then taking time to complete details, sometimes I will choose my background first, other times I choose it along the way.

The outcome

Capturing a moment of curiosity for a client that enjoys farms and cattle
