Lucian the Watchful

Subject: Pet portraits
Medium: Pastel
Dimensions: 12x18
Created: 2026

Lucian the Watchful is a gothic black cat portrait inspired by Victorian portraiture, dark academia, and old-world storytelling. Surrounded by candlelight and shadow, Lucian has a quiet, self-possessed presence that suggests he notices far more than he chooses to reveal. His luminous eyes and dark fur stand out against the richly atmospheric setting, while the formal clothing and antique surroundings give the piece a timeless, slightly mysterious quality. The composition is designed to feel intimate and observant, as though Lucian has been silently keeping watch long before the viewer arrived. Created entirely by hand in soft pastel, Lucian the Watchful is part of The Mourning Menagerie, a collection of character-driven animal portraits that blend realism, imagination, atmosphere, and narrative.
