Magnus the Grim

Subject: Wildlife
Medium: Pastel
Dimensions: 12x18
Created: 2026

Magnus the Grim is a dramatic gothic stag portrait inspired by Victorian elegance, dark academia, and old-world character studies. Seated in a richly appointed interior with candlelight, crystal decanters, and antique furnishings, Magnus carries an imposing presence that feels both regal and reserved. His expression is stern and self-possessed, while the surrounding details suggest a character who values solitude, tradition, and quiet reflection. The contrast between the deep shadows, cool tones of his coat, and warm highlights from the room helps create a moody, atmospheric setting that enhances his commanding personality. Created entirely by hand in soft pastel, Magnus the Grim is part of The Mourning Menagerie, a collection of character-driven animal portraits that blend realism, imagination, and storytelling.
