Majesty & Mockery

Subject: Wildlife
Medium: Pastel
Dimensions: 24x24"
Created: 2026

Majesty & Mockery explores the contrast between power and irreverence through the pairing of a regal lion and a mischievous hyena. The lion carries himself with the weight and dignity of a king, while the hyena introduces a sharper, more playful energy, creating a tension between authority and defiance. The piece blends realistic animal portraiture with theatrical storytelling, using expression, posture, costume, and atmosphere to suggest a larger narrative beyond the frame. Rich color, dramatic lighting, and carefully rendered textures help bring both characters to life while emphasizing their opposing personalities. Created entirely by hand in soft pastel, Majesty & Mockery reflects my interest in combining realism with character, symbolism, and a touch of humor.
