Ascendant

Subject: Wildlife
Medium: Pastel
Dimensions: 14x10
Created: 2025

Ascendant is a close study of a bald eagle, focused on strength, clarity, and presence. Rather than placing the bird in a dramatic narrative setting, the portrait keeps the attention on the eagle itself—its intense gaze, powerful profile, and the subtle shifts of light and texture across the feathers. The piece was created to capture both the physical beauty of the bird and the sense of quiet authority it carries. Fine pastel detail brings out the contrast between the white head feathers, dark body plumage, and golden beak and eye, while the composition gives the eagle a feeling of upward momentum and resolve. Created entirely by hand in soft pastel, Ascendant reflects my interest in wildlife realism and in portraying animals with a strong sense of individuality and presence.
