Pieta After William Adolphe Bouguereau

by Cynthia Kinard

Subject: Figurative
Medium: Oil paint
Dimensions: 49x36
Created: 2014

This is a faithful copy using just my hands and eyes of the Pieta by William Adolphe Bouguereau. It is of Jesus being held by his mother, Mary, whose eyes are red-rimmed from crying. They are surrounded by grief-stricken angels in rainbow colors. Everyone who has viewed it has been moved by the intensity of the emotion conveyed. It took me ten months to complete. It was painted on a wood panel which I made myself and covered with sufficient coats of gesso, in order to preserve the craftsmanship. I love painting these very moving copies!
