“Dermie” is a black-and-white oil portrait on paper of a beloved dog resting quietly. Using the dry brush technique, I focused on Dermie’s expressive eyes, distinctive coat, gentle character, and calm, thoughtful pose.

The commission story

The portrait was commissioned by renowned animal photographer David Whelan as a memorial to his own dog. Working from his reference photograph, I paid particular attention to preserving Dermie’s individual expression and the subtle details that made him immediately recognizable to his owner.

The outcome

The finished portrait became a personal and lasting memorial to Dermie. The artwork was recognized as Meritorious in the 2018 Richeson75 International Animals, Birds & Wildlife Competition and was published in Hyperrealism Magazine No. 6.
